Couple Quit Jobs, Sell Possessions And Live In A Van

A creative couple have sold all their possessions, quit their jobs and moved into a converted van.

Brigette Roper, 30, and her boyfriend Theo Gove-Humphries, 30, bought a plot of land in Portugal where they now live with cat Ginjey Bear.

The van – which is a Mercedes Sprinter – has halved their monthly outgoings as they no longer pay rent nor electricity as they have solar panels.

Former animal nursing assistant Brigette said: “It’s been five years since we lived in a house, so it feels like a distant memory.

“The biggest change is not having everything to your disposal; endless water, gas and power but we quickly got used to making 50 litres of water last more than a couple of washing ups.

“There’s also the limited space, as we are living in a vehicle, it is never going to be massively spacious, but that encourages us to declutter and get outside more.

“We also don’t have shower facilities as this would take up too much room but instead we have built an outdoor wood-fired bath that we found at a scrapyard.

“There is nothing better than bathing under the stars as the bats fly around and the crickets chirp.

“Or alternatively we use an outdoor pressure shower that requires one boiled kettle and one cold, mixed all together then we have a shower!

“It is amazing to think it only took us five months to convert the van from an empty panel van into our comfortable home.

“It wasn’t smooth sailing 24/7, and there were an awful lot of cold, late nights, but the reward was a home that we built ourselves and tailored to Gingey Bear’s needs too.

“We built her litter tray into a space below our seating area, so she has complete privacy when she goes to the toilet, but also it contains the smell and the litter itself.

“We lived in a narrowboat when Ginjey first came into our lives so she has always lived in quirky environments with us.

“She has a Weenect cat tracker attached to her collar and gives me real time updates via the app of where she is but sometimes, I just take her on a walk using a retractable lead.

“She loves living in the van as much as we do, there is a real sense of freedom as we aren’t tied down to a fixed abode.

“We can choose to be wherever we want, when we want, as long as we can get online to upload videos every now and then we are free to roam wherever we can.”

The couple, who are originally from Sparkhill, Birmingham, fund their lifestyle by uploading content to their Youtube channel called ‘The Indie Projects’ boasts over 180k subscribers.

Brigette adds: “We travelled around Europe in a smaller van during 2014/15 and we gained an online following; this has allowed us to actually make a living off of our own lives.

“This means that pretty much anything we do is work, but it’s also our life, so it’s a really cool situation.

“By sharing our journey online, we have built up lifelong connections and friendships, inspired people to do the same, and created resources for people.

“Our passion is exploring new things, trying out alternatives and constantly pushing ourselves to experience what the world has to offer.

“There is only one slight restriction with living in a van, we haven’t got Wi-Fi so sometimes it is tricky to find decent internet so it can mean eight hours to upload a video.

“We can choose to be wherever we want, when we want, as long as we can get online to upload videos every now and then we are free to roam wherever we can.”

“I don’t think we’ll ever move back to the UK and live in a house, but we will travel around the UK in our van.

“We can choose to be wherever we want, when we want, as long as we can get online to upload videos every now and then we are free to roam wherever we can.”

“We have had the chance to visit so many places like Italy and Iceland for free as we can take our home with us.”
