A morbidly obese husband and wife have recreated old images of themselves after losing nearly 400lb (34st) and taken on a pre-baby bucket list of challenges.
Lexi and Danny Reed, 26 and 29, from Terre Haute in Indiana, USA, used the motivation of having a baby to help them switch their 8,000-calorie diet of takeaways for healthy eating and exercise.
Within a year, they had transformed their lives and during hard moments would even chant ‘Baby Reed 2016’ to keep them on track.
Lexi who used weighed 485lbs (34st 9lbs) and 280lbs (20st) Danny, have since taken on a bucket list of challenges from theme park rides, travelling, kayaking, hiking and more.
To further highlight their progress, they have recreated old photographs, from Lexi wearing her wedding dress to posing with family members and giving a friend a piggyback.
Lexi, a receptionist, said: “I wanted to recreate old photos of myself at my heaviest to help me see the progress I’d made and it worked better than reading the numbers on the scales.
“One of the most important ones was when I was in my wedding dress, I was a size 34 then and now I’m a size 12 so I’m definitely half the size I was when I got married.
“At the time, I could barely find a dress that would fit me, so now being able to put it on and barely able to keep it from falling off is a massive change.
“Whenever I compare my pictures now I’m shocked by how heavy and large I was.
“I never actually saw myself as the 485lb girl and changing so fast my mind is still catching up to my body.
“From a side view, my one arm on my wedding day was the size that my whole body now.
“Last year my friend Matt and I posed on a hike with me carrying him but now after losing 300lb he carried me in the photo.
“It makes me really proud, at 485lb I wasn’t able to do a lot of things, I’m only realising now how much I have changed and how much stronger I have become.
“Now Danny and I have all of these fun activities dedicated to our bucket list until we start preparing to have Baby Reed in 2018 or 2019.
“We’ve been on an airplane together, gone hiking, canoeing, even small things like going being able to fit in cinema seats is an achievement.
“Being able to do so many new activities together is amazing, it’s like we are even deeper in love and are falling for one another all over again at the same time.”
Lexi had a BMI of 78.3 at her heaviest weight during her wedding two-years-ago, putting her into the highest category of obesity – a healthy range is 18.5 – 25
She struggled with gentle activity and described her life as a ‘prison’ until the couple started to cut back on fast food and started to exercise.
Lexi said: “Before losing 300lb I was just existing and not living, I was a prisoner in my body and despite wanting to do so many things I couldn’t because of my weight.
“We had a mantra of ‘Baby Reed 2016’, it gave us a purpose it was something we would say a few times a week if not every day to keep us on track.
“Last year I couldn’t climb five stairs and now we can hike and are planning on becoming parents in the future.”
Lexi says since losing 300lb (29st 6) she’s overjoyed that she can ride rollercoasters again after being embarrassingly ejected from one on her first dates with Danny in 2007.
She added: “I was rejected from a rollercoaster with Danny which was embarrassing so I didn’t go on anymore, then I became too scared of going on an airplane in case I didn’t fit the seat.
“Rollercoasters were always a thing I enjoyed so not being able to ride them for ten years broke my heart, now I can do it again it’s great, I feel like I’ve got my life back.”
Now Lexi and Danny weigh 182lb (12st 13) and 190 (13st 8), and hope to inspire others with their weight loss journey.
They maintain that being strict with their diet helped them shed weight and their success can be replicated without surgical help.
Lexi said: “You don’t need to have a specialist meal plan, surgery or a person trainer, you just need to be willing to learn every single day about your diet and exercise.
“I lost half my body weight, it’s crazy, I never thought I would be here so fast and feeling so much better.
“Small changes add up to big results, so changing soda for water, walking instead of sitting on the couch, those every day changes add up.
“Our story has inspired people and makes them realise what can happen in a short period of time, you can change your life with exercise and food, without any surgery.”
